The Underwriter is responsible to achieve profit, growth, service and expense objectives through basic financial analysis and management of a book of business.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Works to underwrite cases where general and some complex underwriting principles will be applied and a solid command of the rating tools is required. Frequency of case review will be based on team lead's decision and in accordance to case level review policies
  • Obtains Field Office staff acceptance of expense and reserve levels necessary to achieve planned expense recovery and underwriting gain objectives.
  • Executes financial management on a book of business
  • Assists and participates in creating and negotiating financial arrangements and settlements through Sales with some client and / or broker contact when necessary
  • General communications will be mostly with internal sales. There will be limited interactions with brokers
  • Underwrites several new firms or new coverage and major benefit revisions
  • Provides direction to other areas in resolving service or claim issues that have financial implications
  • Maintain up -to - date knowledge of applicable health plans and related products
  • Explain underwriting principles and pricing recommendations to sales and brokers and be able to present position based on your knowledge of underwriting, competition, product, understanding of the client needs, etc
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Underwriters, AMT members and multi-site coordinators
  • Identifies needs and makes recommendations for new/improved underwriting processes and procedures
  • Support and / or lead underwriting projects as assigned

Required Qualifications:



  • 1+ years professional business experience, preferably in Managed Care, Accounting or Finance
  • Must have solid financial analysis, problem solving and critical decision-making skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite product
  • Exhibits effective personal communication skills in the areas of listening, speaking and writing. Must possess professional written and verbal skills and formal presentation abilities
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information and confidences appropriately and diplomatically


Years of post-high school education can be substituted/is equivalent to years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • BA/BS degree
  • 1+ years of Underwriting experience in healthcare industry
  • Ability to prioritize and respond effectively to numerous demands
  • Demonstrates negotiation skills. Handles difficult situations diplomatically
  • Solid organizational skills



Connecticut Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $48,300 to $94,500 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
