Position Summary
This position supports the Energy Security Studies Program ( ESSP) at the Center for International Trade and Security ( CITS) within the School of Public and International Affairs ( SPIA). CITS was established in 1987 with the support of former U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk. Since its founding, CITS has developed a network of academic researchers, public officials, and industry representatives with expertise in critical areas of national and international security.

The individual will report to the Director of CITS and will be responsible for helping support the initiative's many activities, including research, policy, education and public outreach. The incumbent will assist CITS faculty and staff in developing research and policy products and disseminating them to the public and relevant stakeholders nationally, internationally, and within the State of Georgia. The position is considered part of the overall CITS team and may be called on to provide academic/student support. The position also collaborates closely with UGA's College of Engineering.

Full funding for this position is guaranteed for Fiscal Year 2025. The position may be renewed annually, contingent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Background in economics, policy and/or political science.
  • Knowledge of energy resources and technologies, particularly power generation.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within complex energy issues that are inherently technical and policy based.
  • Experience in securing grants and/or contracts.
  • Experience in developing and implementing public outreach/communications.
  • Demonstrated supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, presentation).
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and proven efficiency in handling complex and confidential issues.
  • Ability to work with limited information and produce results for the execution of events and presentations.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office application skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, both domestically and internationally, approximately 10-15% time.

CITS Activity Support:

  • Collaborate with CITS staff and faculty to develop articles, op-eds, blog posts, chapters and/or books.
  • Collaborate with CITS staff and faculty to achieve wide dissemination of research and policy products.
  • Collaborate with CITS staff and faculty on website development.
  • Assist with administration, logistics and program development and delivery for forums, summits, and other events.
  • Provide expertise to undergraduate and graduate courses as guest lecturer.
  • Provide expertise and guidance to students as professional mentor.
  • Support and participate in student experiential learning opportunities.
  • Support and participate in public outreach activities of center.

Duties/Responsibilities
Business Development:

  • In consultation with CITS Director and SPIA Grants Coordinator, identify and secure new contracts, grants and/or cooperative agreements to support the CITS Energy Security Studies Program.
  • Prepare and deliver proposals, presentations, and other materials to CITS Director and SPIA Senior Director for Development and Alumni Relations for use with potential new donors.
  • Advise the Senior Director for Development and Alumni Relations, CITS Director, CITS staff and faculty on development of overall fundraising strategy for engaging new potential donors.
  • Liaison with new partners inside and outside the private sector to advance the ideas and products developed at CITS.
