Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Chief Clinical Officer, the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) provides strategic and operational direction, and hands-on support, to Prisma Health\u2019s research endeavors. They are a recognized scientific leader with a track record in developing, fostering, and maintaining scientific and research partnerships among a diverse group of stakeholders, including academia, state and federal governments and industry. They are a leader with a mission to work in partnership to leverage research opportunities that can be translated into innovative or commercial opportunities and optimal patient outcomes. They have a strong reputation of scientific achievement and considered to be a leader in their field among their peers.

Accountabilities

  • Identify opportunities for research where the health system can contribute and leverage existing research capacity of the health system to address in alignment with strategic objectives. This will include the identification of underdeveloped research themes and the creation of novel programs which capitalize on new opportunities that arise.

  • Work with the Chief Clinical Officer to establish research milestones and monitor project progress.

  • \u00A0Provide scientific, technical, and other support as requested by the Chief Clinical Officer in the health system\u2019s efforts to develop and cultivate partnerships, communication, and strategic alliances among researchers and with funding agencies, government (local, regional and/or national), academic affiliates and other public sector institutions, private sector organizations, volunteer, and community agencies.

  • Facilitate and ensure effective implementation of the health system\u2019s programs of research and development.

  • Identify and/or foster integration opportunities\u00A0of research across the health system.

  • Promote the discussion of ethical issues and the application of ethical principles to research.

  • Be a champion and public spokesperson for the health system\u2019s research, working closely with partners to build recognition for Prisma Health nationally, establishing the system as an authoritative recognition for the Corporation nationally and internationally, establishing the system as an authoritative source of information and advice pertaining to health equity research.

  • Regular attendance at and reporting to the Board of Directors of Prisma Health.

  • Work with the Chief Operating Officer, Academics of Prisma Health to provide regular reports regarding corporate and project performance metrics as required.

  • \u00A0Supervise and provide direction to employee(s) hired to assist with the responsibilities of research.

  • Provide general advice to the corporate regarding all scientific matters.

  • Fulfill other responsibilities and perform such other duties of Prisma Health as requested.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of team members that may include final budget authority, hire/termination authority, performance appraisal responsibility and disciplinary authority.\u00A0 Job will be considered a member of management staff at Prisma Health Company or affiliate and will have direct reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Senior level researcher with doctoral-level training in a clinical and/or research discipline relevant to patient-centered outcomes research (e.g., medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, clinical epidemiology, health services research); or a master\u2019s degree in one of these disciplines along with a professional clinical degree (e.g., medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, clinical psychology).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Distinguished record of research leadership, including experience building a successful research program, recruiting, and mentoring of scientific staff, and a record of scientific contribution in a focused area of clinical or health services research.

  • A keen interest in working with patients and/or other stakeholders in the planning and conduct of patient-centered research.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, start-up environment.

  • Expert knowledge of research laboratory operations, and translation research, and experience with funding through working with granting agencies, philanthropic foundations, and industry.

  • Track record of academic accomplishment suitable for appointment as a professor and/or Associate Professor of affiliated academic partners

  • Collegial, highly collaborative, and visible leadership style.
