DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Controller provides strategic leadership and support of systemwide financial functions including corporate accounting, federal and extramural costing policy, benefits accounting, endowment and investment accounting, payroll policy and compliance and taxation. We deliver efficient and effective financial services, provide best practices and guidance to our campus and medical center communities, develop and administer systemwide policies and procedures, and ensure the University's financial systems are compliant with all University, State, and Federal laws, rules, and regulations. Financial Reporting with the Controller's Office is responsible for external and internal reporting for interim and year-end for the University of California, University of California Retirement System, and University of California Retiree Health Benefits Trust, performing technical accounting research and providing accounting guidance, coordinating various external audits and attestation services, ensuring the integrity of financial systems and reporting, working on major system innovations and coordinating programming efforts to create, improve and streamline accounting and reporting applications.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the UC Controller Intern will support the Operational Excellence team in projects related to the website, knowledgebase, and process improvement efforts. Help the UC Controller department to advance organizational effectiveness through clear communications and business process redesign. Will work closely with accounting and other business functions to gain understanding of the department's operations and provide recommendations for enhancing communication and work strategies.

Responsibilities:

50% Knowledge Management Support

Assist in the development of knowledge management strategies for the UC Controller department. Perform review of current knowledge materials (website, SharePoint, accounting manual) and make recommendations on enhancements to how information is being documented and shared. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and document knowledge management opportunities. Develop written knowledge materials and guides to communicate complex information effectively. Ensure the accuracy, clarity, and consistency of written materials through research and fact-checking.

40% Process Improvement Support

Assist with the creation of a process inventory for the UC Controller department. Work with cross-functional teams to create a list of all processes for the department. Working closely with the process improvement specialist, assist with business process mapping and design sessions. Create process documentation, including flowcharts, diagrams, and written procedures to capture current workflows.

10% Other

Assist with other accounting and administrative projects as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled University of California student
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to write clear and concise emails
  • Ability to communicate technical information to personnel at various levels in the organization
  • Demonstrate interest in learning in an enterprise environment
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable as priorities evolve

Education

  • High school graduate and/or equivalent experience/training
