WHAT WE ARE SEEKING

The City of Mill Valley is seeking a self-directed problemsolver with an entrepreneurial spirit, high standards of excellence, and demonstrated commitment to public service and program development. The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, be adept at interacting with individuals of all ages/backgrounds and pay keen attention to detail. Experience working as a property & evidence technician, community service officer or liaison, police cadet, or professional staff for a police department is highly desired.

Minimum requirements include: equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of full-time work involving public contact. APPLICANTS MUST BE 21 years or older.

CSO RESPONSIBILITIES

The Community Services Officer performs a wide-range of non-sworn law enforcement duties, crime prevention work, community event planning, and performs other duties as assigned.

Health Insurance – The City pays the full premium for the Kaiser Family Plan and up to the same amount for an HMO with Western Health Advantage. Currently both plan options (Kaiser or Western Health Advantage) have premiums covered by the City so there is no out-of-pocket cost to the employee paid toward the monthly premium.

Dental Insurance – The City pays the full premium for coverage with Delta Dental

Leave – the City offers generous leave, including:

  • Vacation – 2 to 5 weeks depending on service time
  • Sick – 11 days per year
  • Holidays – 15 total per year

Retirement

  • CalPERS retirement457 Deferred Compensation Plan (with up to $600 in matching by the city)
    • "New"/PEPRA sworn safety employees will be covered by the PERS 2.7% @ 57 Plan
    • "Classic" sworn safety employees will be covered by the CalPERS 3.0% @ 55 Plan
  • Retirement Health Savings Account (RHSA) with mandatory 1% employee contribution (1.5% after 5 years of service); City matches after first year.

ABOUT MILL VALLEY

The City of Mill Valley is 14 miles north of San Francisco and 40 miles from California’s famous wine country. Mill Valley is a town with a rich and eclectic cultural history and a lively and engaged citizenry. Mill Valley is primarily a suburban community, with distinctive residential neighborhoods representing the many eras of the town’s growth from a small mill town to the modern full service city it is today. Our population’s approximately 14,000 residents live in a 4.8 square mile area, although we serve as the center for a larger unincorporated Mill Valley area with more than 30,000 residents. The City of Mill Valley has a staff of almost 130 regular employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $41 million.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Police Department includes about 28 personnel, 22 of whom are sworn. Established in 1906, the Department has a long and decorated history of service to the Mill Valley and Southern Marin communities. Based on a community policing model, the Department takes pride in collaborating with community members and local stakeholders to maintain and enhance the safety and quality of neighborhoods.
