Staff Specialist - Communications

The Staff Specialist - Communications serves as a critical member of the communications team, working collaboratively with all departmental staff under the supervision of the district's executive director of communications. The Specialist helps to develop and execute strategic communications plans across multiple platforms for multiple audiences, with particular emphasis on creating high-quality messages and content that informs families and other key district stakeholders about district news, events, and initiatives.


Essential Functions



  • Participates as a member of the communications team in developing strategic communications plans to promote district programs and initiatives, including identifying key audiences, tactics, timelines, and measures of success.
  • In collaboration with communications staff members, works with subject matter experts across district offices to develop content describing district programs and initiatives for a range audience.
  • Writes content at different readability levels to meet the needs and interests of readers from diverse backgrounds, including students, parents, community partners, policymakers, staff members, and professional educators.
  • Develops content for different platforms, including printed documents of various lengths (from flyers and brochures to booklets and reports), robocalls and text messages, website copy, digital newsletters, and audio and video scripts.
  • Identifies, creates, or oversees creation of graphic elements to enhance messages, including photo selection, infographics, icons, gifs, or other visual elements.
  • Provides editorial support and advice to school and district staff.
  • Copyedits and proofreads text as required.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining a district style guide.
  • Supports staff members and schools use of the district's robocall/text messaging system.
  • Supports use of the district's mass emailing system.
  • Takes photos and video
  • Serves as a critical member of the district's communications team, assisting where needed with general department tasks.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications



  • Undergraduate degree in Communications, Writing, Journalism, English, or related field. Degree must be from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum three years' direct experience in a communications, marketing, publishing, or journalism role.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • Experience with Adobe creative suite and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience in writing for multiple audiences and formats, including social media and web.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people and teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, take initiative, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in photography and/or graphic design desirable.
