Position Summary

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, plan layout, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and controls equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plan new or modified installations consistent with standard specifications and local electrical codes. To minimize waste of material, remove unreliable wiring and provides access for future maintenance.
  2. Prepare sketches designating location of wiring, fixtures, and equipment, and read diagrams or blueprints to ensure that all electrical installations and removals are consistent with the Uniform Electrical Code.
  3. Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduits using proper hand or power tools.
  4. Connect wiring from electrical fixtures to main source.
  5. Test continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components.
  6. Make certain that all work orders are completed satisfactorily.
  7. Examine and repair faulty electrical system or equipment.
  8. Determine the amount of work and material required on a work assignment, and submit project schedules as required.
  9. Inform the department head of any complications, changes, or adjustments on work assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or GED, plus five (5) years experience working in the area of duties mentioned above. JE-98 journeyman electrical license from the State of New Mexico required.
  2. Knowledge of accepted principles and practices of electrical systems, electricity and electrical equipment.
  3. Ability to exercise judgment, evaluate a problem area, and to use initiative in reaching a solution.
  4. Ability to communicate well with others.
  5. Ability to carry out the safety rules and policies established by the department.
  6. Ability to communicate in both oral and written English.

Screening and Compliance

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination.
  2. Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
  3. Employee must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license by employment date and retain a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position.
  4. Employee must have a thorough knowledge and use of the tools and equipment required of the trade.
  5. Employee must possess a journeyman electrical license from the State of New Mexico.
Working Conditions
  1. Duties are performed indoors, estimated at 50%.
  2. Indoor duties are performed in a temperature-controlled environment; however, worker is exposed to natural weather conditions while working outdoors 50% of the time.
  3. Outdoor surfaces include natural ground, concrete, asphalt, ramps, stairs, or decks.
  4. Work hazards or potential work hazards include the exposure to dangerous situations involving high voltage, adverse weather conditions and other mechanical hazards, hazards associated with working at heights.
  5. Worker is exposed to snow, wind, possible lightening, and extreme cold and heat.
  6. Worker is exposed to high voltage during inspections, safety checks, maintenance, and repair when the wire must remain "hot." Worker must follow safety procedures while working on "hot" wires.
  7. Work may include those of a correctional facility environment with exposure to noise and dangerous situations that could involve serious bodily injury and other health hazards.
Equipment, Toosl and Materials
  1. Employee handles writing utensils, various paperwork, files and reports in the documentation of work.
  2. Employee operates a County vehicle.
  3. Employee utilizes various hand tools, voltmeter, ohmmeter, and other test instruments.
  4. Employee handles ladders, scaffolds, drills, hand tools, pipe benders, saws, fish tape and fuse pullers, cherry picker, aerial lift truck, tommy lift truck.
  5. Employee operates two-way radio, utilizes beeper, and safety equipment, including glasses, safety shoes, hard hats, back support belts, vests, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and electrical gloves.
