  • Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care
  • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams
  • Carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required
  • Performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision
  • Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team

Department Description

The Adult Medical / Surgical High Acuity unit provides care to a diverse adult patient population with an emphasis on acute and chronic medicine patients. The patients require more frequent or more complex nursing assessments and interventions. Up to 16 different services admit patients to this unit.

Common patient populations seen are respiratory compromise, cardiac conditions, kidney and liver patients and infectious diseases.

All 28 beds have telemetry and continuous pulse oximetry monitoring capability. Patients transition from the adult critical care units, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Emergency Department and acute care floors to this unit, depending on their condition and nursing care needs.

Nurses on this unit are a highly motivated group of professionals providing outstanding care to the entire patient populations served. Teamwork among our nursing staff, as well as physician and nurse collaboration, is well tuned and allows workflow to occur optimally.

The exposure to the diverse patient populations and varied levels of complexity in care provides nurses the ability to developing and hone keen assessment skills. The unit is fast paced and highly rewarding with many hands on learning opportunities available on a daily basis.

Required Qualifications


  • A minimum of two (2) years of recent RN clinical work experience in Med/Surg/Tele, TCU/Stepdown, or ICU unit
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
